Spean Bridge and the Commando Memorial
Although only a small Highland village, Spean Bridge boasts its own 9 hole golf course plus a fascinating museum dedicated to the Commandos of World War II.
The famous Commando Memorial is located just one mile north of the Smiddy House and provides spectacular views over the ground where the Commandos once trained, across to Aonach Mor and Ben Nevis and beyond.
The Smiddy House is an ideal centre for all outdoor activities, with a further 3 golf courses within easy reach at Fort William, Traigh and Fort Augustus; mountain bike trails at nearby Leanachan Forest as well as Aonach Mor; Highland Icelandic Horse Trekking at nearby Achnacarry; canoeing on the rivers Spean and Roy and fishing venues at various locations in the vicinity.
Ben Nevis and Nevis Range
Nevis Range Ski Resort at Aonach Mor is only 3 miles away and offers all year round access by cable gondolas for skiing and snowboarding during the winter, and nature walks in the summer months. Further details can be found on the Nevis Range website.

Glenfinnan
For those who prefer a more relaxing holiday, take a trip from Glenfinnan along Loch Shiel, hopefully seeing wildlife along the way. A variety of different cruises are available ranging from an hour to a day, for more details ring 01397 722235. Glenfinnan is steeped in history and the National Trust Visitor centre just opposite the famous monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie at the head of Loch Shiel is the place to learn more about the Jacobites.
Or you could try a cruise along the Caledonian Canal, visit Neptune's Staircase at Corpach and follow the trail of the Loch Ness Monster.
For those interested in castles, at the turnoff to the A830 (Road to the Isles) there are the ruins of old Inverlochy Castle, which played a part in the Civil War of 1642.
Glen Nevis
Glen Nevis, lying at the foot of Ben Nevis, is both a haven for walkers and visitors just wanting to relax by the river in the summer months. Information on the flora and fauna of the Glen can be found in the Visitor Centre located half way along Glen Nevis alongside the picnic and parking areas.
